Judge frees Republican National Committee to suppress the vote

More than 30 years ago, the Republican National Committee got caught trying to keep people of color from voting. A Democratic National Committee lawsuit led to the RNC being required to submit its “ballot security” plans to a federal court for approval, a requirement that got extended after Republicans were caught breaking the rules. But no more:

In order to extend the decree, the DNC needed to show that the RNC violated the terms of pact. Democrats pointed to a series of incidents during the 2016 election where they alleged people who claimed or appeared to be working for the RNC were engaged in pollwatching. And a POLITICO article from November describing RNC spokesman Sean Spicer's election day activities led to the judge ordering him to submit to a deposition.

However, Vazquez, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, said in his ruling that despite the various claims, the Democrats had not shown any violation "by a preponderance of the evidence."

Republicans have been suppressing the vote all along, of course—they’ve just been forced to do it through state parties and campaigns rather than the RNC. Now their hands are untied, and it’ll take a whole new violation and lawsuit to get them under control again. At which point the case may well come before a Trump-appointed judge.

The prospect of a Trump-appointed judge is just one of the reasons it’s so important to take back the Senate. Can you chip in $3 to the Arizona and Nevada Democratic nominee funds?
